FIELD TRIP ON THURSDAY, MAY 13

The third grade will be traveling to the Arboretum in Arcadia. I went there last year with the 3rd and 4th grade class and everyone loved it. There is so much to see. We have an 11:30 A.M. plant life tour scheduled that lasts for 2 hours. Students should bring lunch with them. They are not allowed to eat inside the Arboretum because of all the animals. Admission is free for students, but $10 is due by Monday to cover the cost of the bus. Permission slips will go home tomorrow morning. Yay!

Welcome to the last week of April! Thanks for bearing with me last week when the internet at school wasn't working, or only for a few seconds at a time. It was very hard to write a blog that way. But everyone got their homework done, so that's great. Thanks to everyone who went to Mass yesterday and participated in the breakfast after. Yum.

We started a new selection this morning called Trapped by the Ice! and it is the last selection in theme 5. We will be focusing on the VCCV pattern, possessive pronouns, text organization, a learning log, and homophones this week. The VCCV pattern is the vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel pattern and it is present in all of our words this week.

The spelling bee for grades 1-4 will be on Tuesday, May 11. We will be studying the 3rd and 4th grade words in school every day up until May 11. Students do not have to participate in the bee, however they do have to study the words with the rest of the class.

We continue in math multiplying money, 2-digit by 1 digit and 3-digit by 1 digit. Practice the multiplication tables with your child so they can complete their problems faster.

Good job to everyone last week when we were being observed. It was definitely different having people in and out of our classrooms all day long on those first two days. But we survived. Thanks for everyone who cooperated yesterday when I was out.

This week we finish the Seal Surfer selection and start Two Days in May. Our spelling test on Seal Surfer is today. Yesterday students worked on finishing up Seal Surfer by answering questions about the selection. They focused on using exact verbs and substituting a general verb for a more exact verb. They also reviewed words for young animals by making a web of different baby animals. In the afternoon they defined some words pertinent to the math lesson and some animal words too. The math lesson was a review of chapter 14 and they did a worksheet to review. In social studies they learned some ways that we can get and use mineral resources and answered questions.

Today, Tuesday, we are finishing up Seal Surfer by reviewing helping verbs, combining sentences with helping verbs, and learning more words that have multiple meanings. We are going to make a graph in math so we will be using graph paper to understand how bar graphs look. Our homework is math PB 73 tonight.

On Wednesday, we start the new selection, Two Days in May. This is the last selection in theme 4, Animal Habitats. We will learn how to make judgments and choose whether the characters made good decisions or not in our opinions. We will learn new words with prefixes and suffixes and that will be what our spelling words are for this selection. Also, we learn how to recognize common irregular verbs and use the correct verb forms. In math we will learn how to read bar graphs. Some bar graphs have the same information, but a different scale, so we will tell the differences and identify which ones we like better. In science we will still focus on the weather and clouds. We'll review the pictures from our books of the different kinds of clouds, then make a poster model of different cloud types. Our homework is a spelling sailboat, math PB 74, and to write 3 facts about the weather.

On Thursday we will read the second segment of Two Days in May and make judgments about the characters' actions. We will go more into prefixes and suffixes and find base words. In math we will make bar graphs again, but this time focus on how you select a title, labels, and a scale for certain bar graphs. We have stations of the cross again in the afternoon, followed by P.E. The homework is spelling sentences and math PB 75.

And Friday is a full day. We will learn similes and foregrounds in Two Days in May. And our skill we will focus on is a problem-solution essay. Students will read one and then take notes on how they can write their own problem-solution essay. Again we will review making judgments and read a selection in order to fill out a decision chart. We will read 4 poems and identify the rhythm and rhyme in the poems. Students will define certain words from these poems or read The Upside Down Elephant and answer those questions. The rest of the morning and early afternoon will be used for catching up on work from the week. But at the end of the day we will learn line plots in math. Have a good week!

Welcome to the last week of February. I'm sorry I forgot to put up the updates for yesterday and this week! I was grading and doing progress reports last night and completely forgot. I hope most students got their homework done. I will get that on the website right now and then come back and let you know what we are up to for this week.

Week of February 15-19, 2010

No school yesterday, so sorry. I hope everyone had a good Presidents' Day. We also have no school for the children on Friday due to a WASC day for the teachers. This week we are starting Theme 4: Animal Habitats. We began today by reading segment one of the Nights of the Pufflings in our new reading books. We will read segment 2 tomorrow. This selection focuses on fact and opinions. It is a nonfiction selection that takes place in Iceland. The photos in the book are great. We also got our spelling words, which all have the vowel + /r/ sound. We learned in math how to choose the correct operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division).

Tomorrow morning we have 8:00 Mass. Then we will read segment 2 of Nights of the Pufflings. Then we will review syllabication from themes 1, 2, and 3. In social studies we will learn different ways that a person can make a living. In math we will divide by 6, 7, and 8 and see how fast children can do the problems on a specific page. In science we continue with the solar system and we learn how scientists view space from earth, and determine how scientists view objects from space.

And on Thursday we will have art with Vivian, from USC. Taking notes is the skill that we will learn and we'll look at a specific section of Nights of the Pufflings to take notes on. We will again revisit the skill of facts and opinions. We'll have our chapter review in science and then divide by 9 and 10. We also have Stations of the Cross from now until Easter at 2:00 P.M. Third grade will be in charge of the March 18 Stations of the Cross and we'll work on that in class. And Friday is Ms. Curtis's birthday.

Keep bringing in information on Nigeria. Februar is Black History Month and our country is Nigeria. We will gather information as a class and then have a project made together. This project will be displayed for other classes to see at the end of the month. Any information you have about the culture of Nigeria will be welcome!

Week of February 8-12, 2010

Thank you, everybody, for participating in Catholic Schools Week. The third grade class had the most participants all week, so we got a special prize! The pep rally was a great time and thanks to all students who wanted to participate.

This week is a full week and we have a few special events. We will review past and future tense and then have our spelling test on The Garden of Abdul Gasazi tomorrow. This ends theme 3 and we will review and have our assessments this week.

On Wednesday we have mass, so please come in full uniform. Thursday is when we will celebrate Valentine's Day. The parent board is sponsoring their Cupcake Fundraiser on Thursday also and I will have more details about that soon.

In math we have started division. Please practice those multiplication facts! We are doing some mad minutes with multiplication. Practice, practice, practice. It will make division so much easier. We are going to have a quiz this Wednesday on chapters 9 and 10. In science we will continue with the solar system and learn how the sun affects the earth. We are also lucky to have Vivian Wang, of USC, doing art with us on Thursdays. She'll be here this Thursday with another art project. Friday is a full day and students should come in full uniform.

A short week! Here's what we are planning to do.

Monday there is no school in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There is no homework. We are continuing work with The Mysterious Giant of Barletta all the way until Friday. The spelling test will be on Friday. This week in language arts we focus on following directions, making inferences, understanding how to read magazine articles, commas for direct address, and using exact verbs. In math we will review our multiplication facts through 8 and then learn 9 and 10. Friday is a full day and I'd like to watch a video from the History Channel called "Giants: Friend or Foe". This should go well with our incredible stories theme. Have yourselves a good week!

Sorry, I'm late, but welcome to the week of January 11-15! My internet doesn't always work when I want it to, so I apologize for not having the announcements up.

We do have mass this week, on Wednesday, January 13. There is early dismissal on Friday, the 15th. Thank you to everyone who got their Good Touch Bad Touch permission slips in on time. We are only missing one. As soon as we get that one in we can start the program.

Last week we started the first story of our new theme, Incredible Stories. The second story in this theme is called The Mysterious Giant of Barletta. We are focusing on verbs and writing with verbs this week. We are also doing the theme 2 assessment this week. Today we did the reading comprehension and the rest of the week we will do the checking skills, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and fluency. Keep reading with your child each night!

In math we are practicing our multiplication facts. We have learned different ways to understand the facts, but the easiest and fastest will just be for them to memorize them. We will have a quiz on the previous chapter on Thursday just to see where people are. In science we are reading a little bit about how to recycle and why it is a good idea. Students can make a poster to show the ideas of why recycling helps the planet. If I think of anything else then I will update!

I realized that I forgot to put the homework up for this week. There was no written homework for students. They were just supposed to focus on the program at the beginning of the week. And then they were supposed to remember to bring in their items for the classroom parties, as well as the $3 for the pizza.

There will be a packet of work going home today for students to work on over Christmas break. Some of it is a little easier and some is more challenging work. I just ask that students attempt some of the work and bring the packet back when school resumes in January. We will go over it in class.

Week of November 30 - December 4

I hope you had a good Thanksgiving and weren't caught in too much traffic! I went to Arizona and it took me 8 hours to get back yesterday, but there was only one hour of traffic, which is an improvement from last year.

First things first, I don't want to forget a few things we have going on this week. On Wednesday we have mass with 7th grade and on Friday we have school mass. On Wednesday and Thursday mornings we have extra music practice with Mr. Scott from 11:05 - 11:35. This is in addition to our regular music session, which is Tuesday afternoons from 2:00 - 3:00. If you have any colored clothing that could be used for munchkins, we will use it! I have a grade level meeting on Thursday afternoon and progress reports go home on that day too.

We had a spelling test last week on The Talking Cloth. Today we start the last selection in theme 2, which is called Dancing Rainbows. We won't have a spelling test this week. The spelling words are on the website already. They focus on the long i sound. In language arts we will learn:

We started multiplication last week and we will multiply with 2, 3, and 5. We will also understand when we have too much or too little information to solve a problem. And there will be some worksheets on repeated addition and how it is related to multiplication.

We had our last week of the USC mini-course team on Health for Life! last week. The kids really loved it and showed that they were learning a lot. So we are back to the science book and this week we are learning about how sound is made, how it travels, volume, pitch, what things can make sounds, what echoes are, how people use sound, and what vocal cords are.

This is a very short week. We had a full day of school yesterday, where we finished up learning about The Talking Cloth. Today we had a spelling test and worked on using exact nouns. This week St. Raphael was fortunate to have about 30 juniors from Crespi Carmelite High School spend their days with our community. We were lucky to have 7 of them in the 3rd grade classroom for half of the day today. After lunch we went to mass with the 7th grade and the rest of the Crespi students. Thank you for coming to parent teacher conferences this past Friday! I appreciate that everyone takes time to come in to meet. We have a short week coming up. There is early dismissal on Friday, the 20th.

On Monday we'll start a new selection called The Talking Cloth. Our new spelling words, which focus on three letter clusters and unexpected consonant patterns, will be given on Monday. We continue with nouns and learn some more singular nouns with plural nouns. In math we are reviewing time and we will spend some more time on this too. Elapsed time is a concept that we need to review. In social studies we will review important documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the branches of the government.

On Tuesday we will have one of our last visits from the USC team, Health For Life! They have done a great job this semester and we will be sad to see them leave. One of the skills we are learning in The Talking Cloth is noting details. We'll practice this two or three times more in the selection. And in spelling we'll learn about certain contractions, what they mean, and how to form them. We have computers and music on Tuesdays so we will be able to review time again. And Mr. Scott would like you to continue looking for colorful costumes for the students to be able to wear at the Christmas program. They are going to munchkins from The Wizard of Oz with the 7th grade. Anything you can make, or buy for a low price, would be greatly appreciated. Keep us informed if you see anything!

On Wednesday we continue with The Talking Cloth and will learn how to answer a question by using complete sentences. Also we review three letter clusters and unexpected consonant patterns. Father Tony informed us on Friday that on Wednesday we are going to have some junior high school students from Crespi with us in the classroom from about recess until 2:00pm. At 1:00pm we will go to mass with them and the 7th grade. It's a way for our students to be able to work with other students a little older for them and build relationships. It will give the juniors a chance to help out our kids. After the students leave, we are going to watch a video from the Travel Channel on The Galapagos Islands, Angel Falls, and the Amazon River.

On Thursday students will take the details that they have been studying from The Talking Cloth and choose a character to write a character sketch about. They'll use adjectives to describe how the character acts and try to guess what the character's favorite food is. They will also read how to follow a recipe. This recipe tells how to make homemade peanut butter. And in the afternoon in math we will be doing some more work on time and using a schedule. Keep practicing at home!

Friday is a half day. We will learn a little more about rhyming words and understand that a word doesn't have to have similar spellings to rhyme with another word. Thanks, and have a great week!

Welcome to a short week! I hope everyone had a good weekend. Good job to the boys football team for a great season. We are proud of you. This week we have a short week due to Veterans' Day and parent teacher conferences. We will have homework on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday's homework will be due on Thursday. We will not have a spelling test until the following week.

We are reading the selection called Anthony Reynoso: Born to Rope. This week in the selection we will focus on categorizing and classifying and asking questions. We also continue reviewing how to make plurals. For example, most plurals are formed by adding -s to the end of a word, but if a word ends in -ch or -x, you have to add -es. And if a word ends with a consonant and then a -y, you have to change the -y to an -i and add es. Also in language arts we will learn to correct run-on sentences in order to improve writing. And finally we will learn how to use the guide words in the dictionary in order to look up words faster.

In math we have worked on time and money for the past two weeks. We will review and continue with money. In addition we will find out how to use a schedule and find elapsed time between activities. There may be some additional homework as I assess how well students are grasping the concept of telling elapsed time.

I hope everyone had a good Friday off this week! We have theme 1 assessment testing, so much of our language arts time will be spent reviewing the selections, skills, strategies, vocabulary words, and spelling words. We will take a practice spelling test that reviews all the words from the first 3 selections. We will practice reading comprehension with some nonfiction passages. Students wrote a description of their favorite outdoor place last week and we will revise these drafts. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we will be taking the Theme 1 assessment. The homework this week will review and prepare them as well. I have made up several practice tests that mock the theme assessments. This will prepare them in taking a test with similar directions.

On Tuesday, October 20, at 7:00 P.M. we will have our annual parent meeting. This gives us a chance to get together and talk a little bit and hear what our room mother has to say about any upcoming events. I hope to see everyone there!

We have a short week for the kids this week. Last week I was out for half of Thursday and all day Friday. I was out of town and returned late Sunday night. This week in class we are still working on The Waterfall as our selection. In this selection the skills are noting details, cause and effect, using a K-W-L chart (know, want to know, learn), a paragraph that explains, subjects and predicates, story structure, and transforming questions into statements. Our spelling words remain the same. Our strategy focus is predict and infer. In math we are understanding when is the correct time to estimate and when is an exact answer better. We are also introducing what is a number sentence and how to write one. Another skill that we are reviewing is the parts of a dictionary. This will be very important once the students start defining the key vocabulary words on their own from the classroom dictionaries. The spelling test will be on THURSDAY, 10/15.

There is no school this Friday for the students. Teachers have an in-service day.

Thank you to all students and parents who have been working on bringing in information on Columbia. We are presenting our project on Thursday afternoon. Please bring in any more information on the country, Columbia, that you have. Everything is welcome.

Good job testing last week! The students did a great job in taking the tests seriously. I had several of them even say to me that they liked certain tests or they enjoyed testing. We have testing on Monday and Tuesday of this week as well. It is called the CogAt and only for grades 3, 5, and 7. We will take 2 parts of this on Monday and the final part on Tuesday. We practiced last week to learn what these questions are like. Most students enjoyed this practicing as well, so we are hopeful that they will do well.

Apart from testing, we will be finishing up the story, The Ballad of Mulan. We will have the spelling test on Wednesday. The new selection we will start is called The Waterfall. There will be new spelling words given out on Wednesday and the test on The Waterfall will most likely be next Thursday, October 15. In math we are focusing on adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers. There will be homework every day this week except for Friday. Have a good week!

Thanks to everyone who made it a great trip to the LA County Fair! It was very hot but we got through it. I hope you had fun and were able to see some interesting exhibits. Iowa Testing begins tomorrow and will continue into next week. We have been practicing every day for these tests. Make sure students have a good night's sleep and eat breakfast before class. There is no homework this week, except for a project on Columbia that we will be starting to gather information for. I'll talk more about that in the homework. Other than that, students are encouraged to read nightly, as always, and get a good night's sleep to be rested for the testing. On Monday we will take the vocabulary, capitalization, punctuation, and usage and expression tests. Have a good week!

I can't think of anything clever to say, so let's just get right into it!

We have a relatively short week because of the field trip to the LA County Fair on Friday. We are continuing to practice everyday for the Iowa test that will begin next Monday. We took our spelling test on The Lost and Found on Tuesday. And we won't have our spelling test on The Ballad of Mulan until next week, due to the time spent practicing for the Iowa tests. A few more skills that we will be introduced to and revisiting are making inferences, writing a letter, syllabication, writing a response journal entry, and using the dictionary. In science we will be focusing on the states of matter, as well as chemical and physical changes. And in social studies, we will understand the geography of the United States, and some more landforms. Students will receive more maps on the sections of the United States to color. It is very important for them to realize the size of a community versus the size of the world. We hope to improve our Iowa scores by spending extra time on map skills.

There is homework everyday this week, except for Friday.

The LA County Fair is Friday and we leave at 8:30 A.M. sharp, so don't be late. Get your money in to the office or to me ASAP, please. Thanks, and have a great week!
